Do you mean that it's appropriate to spend as little as possible? I can certainly see that argument...

Depends on the manufacturer. I paid £380 for the most recent bottom-end Sony; older models tend to be cheaper, and barely different. Some manufacturers are cheaper than others.

The 32V4000? Yes, I noticed that. It's £50 more in John Lewis, but gets the 5-year warranty love. It's all a bit of a nebulous concept, though - maybe to be explored in greater depth in January, when we are all hunting geckos for food.

About two hours a day; any more and you'll damage your eyes.

Not sure on "appropriate" but I reckon you get what you pay for going from 300 to 500 (before discount) after which it's diminishing returns. You can get an old model on clearance from Richer Sounds, which will be feature limited compared to the new stuff, which you may or may not care about. I paid 500 for the entry level Panasonic (32LMD70), and you can now get it for less than 400, and it's a good telly for standard def telly. I would stick with a known brand, some of the cheaper ones will probably suffer for standard def sources like PS2, non-upscaling DVD etc
