There's no accounting for plutonium
Interesting point made by a hunt saboteur interviewed on Today this morning. Queried about the oft-repeated bromide that the police do not have the resources to police hunts and ensure that no animals are killed, she pointed out that a lot of manpower will be freed up by the police no longer having to arrest the hunt saboteurs. Also, quite reasonably, that the police had access to an enormous amount of auxiliary support, information and experience on how to identify and forestall the hunting of live animals - from the hunt sabs themselves.

It must be awfully confusing for the Babylon right now. We can only extend our sympathies, really.

Hmmm,

I would suspect that despite the brand spanking new illegality of hunting (caveated) does precious little to alleviate the illegality of sabs. It was never the fact that they were sabotuers as much as it was the actions that they were taking. Still, at least the boys in blue will no longer be asked to enforce the heavy-handed line issued by the monied in red.

Except that the sabs will no longer have to do anything illegal or deleterious to public order. If the police are serious about enforcing the law, then they should invite the sabs to act as consultants - in effect, as auxiliaries, with a brief to do their civic duty and report any crimes they see being committed by the hunters. An exchange of mobile numbers should do the trick...

Ideal, were it the case that old enmities could be exchanged so soon. [sigh]

Yes; the 'police resources' line does rather ignore the enormous chunks of police resources that have been used in policing hunts every weekend for the last 10+ years.

The League Against Cruel Sports (my ex-employers) have I belive been doing quite a bit of extra training for hunt monitors, for those who wish to move from monitoring into helping arrest/helping gather evidence/etc.

I half expected them to say 'We're trying to trace the current whereabouts of a gung-ho Texan and a recently-bereaved Yorkshire policeman, and we're dredging a loch in Scotland'. I mean, plutonium's just not the sort of stuff you should be unsure about how much of it you've got to the extent that you can just lose 30kg of it through paperwork.

My heart was simply aching for Princess Michael of Kent this morning. :)
