Is this thing off?

Long absence, and some confusion. I don't entirely know what this is, at this point. Im not wholly sure what I, this username, this entity, this series of statements and responses is. Which is all very first world problems, of course. Possibly it's not a useful line of thought. I sort of have a sense of what I do with this self, but said self is confused in its objectives, maybe, or just confused in its methods.

I'm having a bit of a day, I think, is the short answer. Especially if you're not someone I regularly interact with, feel free to leave a screened comment - give me, in a sense more literal than usual, what for, or wherefore.

On the Nuremberg Trials - Rebecca West

The Allies reacted according to their histories. The French, many of whom had been in concentration camps, rested and read; no nation has endured more wars, or been more persistent in its creation of a culture, and it has been done this way. The British reconstituted an Indian hill station; anybody who wants to know what they were like in Nuremberg need only read the early works of Rudyard Kipling. In villas set among the Bavarian pines, amid German modernist furniture, each piece of which seemed to have an enormous behind, a triple feat of reconstruction was performed: people who were in Germany pretended that they were people in the jungle who were pretending they were in England.

Friendlist tidy

I'm doing a friendslist tidy - just wanted to be clear that it really is nothing personal. I'm taking off some people who no longer post (or who no longer post to a list I'm on), some people I added at one point or another but never actually got to know, some people who I speak to IRL so frequently that reading their journals creates a strange echo chamber effect, or people I just don't have time to follow - I'm radically limited in my LJ time at present. I'll be doing this over the next few days...

On reflection

It occurs that Meatloaf has undertaken not to lie to her, not to forget the way she feels right now, not to forgive himself if they don't go all the way, never to do it better than he does it with her (this is unpleasant on a number of levels, but given that he has not actually gone all the way with her suggests that he is already in need of some expectation management), and finally not to forget everything on the grounds that it was a brief interlude and a midsummer night's fling.

So, really, he'll do anything for love, but he won't do those.

George Saunders on Sarah Palin

Do you know the difference between me and a Hockey Mom who has forgot her lipstick?
A dog collar.
Do you know the difference between me and a dog collar smeared with lipstick?
Not a damn thing.
We are essentially wired identical.
So, when Barack Obama says he will put some lipstick on my pig, I am, like, Are you calling me a pig? If so, thanks! Pigs are the most non-Élite of all barnyard animals. And also, if you put lipstick on my pig, do you know what the difference will be between that pig and a pit bull? I’ll tell you: a pit bull can easily kill a pig. And, as the pig dies, guess what the Hockey Mom is doing? Going to her car, putting on more lipstick, so that, upon returning, finding that pig dead, she once again looks identical to that pit bull, which, staying on mission, the two of them step over the dead pig, looking exactly like twins, except the pit bull is scratching his lower ass with one frantic leg, whereas the Hockey Mom is carrying an extra hockey stick in case Todd breaks his again. But both are going, like, Ha ha, where’s that dumb pig now? Dead, that’s who, and also: not a smidge of lipstick.

Stodir has filed to go into administration, leading among other things to the nationalisation of Glitnir, and the plummeting of Baugur, in which Stodir had a 39% holding. The down side of this is that it has thrown into chaos at least 40% of what anyone knows about Icelandic business (unless there are moves to nationalise Bjork). The upside?
